Home to misty mountains old, super happy toilets and the reason for ur trip, the turtles.
A few interesting points on our initial wander. firstly, petrol pumps hand down from the roof.
Train tracks you HAVE to walk over to cross to the station.
...and themed phone boxes!
The town sits on the estuary into the sea.
It was not far to Ohama beach.
The beach is widely known as an area where sea turtles come to lay their eggs.
First stop at the sea turtle museum.
It was all in Japanese, but the visual aspects were pretty obvious.
Although we didn't get to the bottom of why the older turtles were there in such small swimming pools.
Some of the sizes they can grow to are pretty immense, who would have thought it! I brought and read a Japanese folk story book (translated obviously)and one story features someone riding on a turtles back to the undersea king. Now this would make more sense in reality - Except of course the undersea king part ;)
We took a beach stroll to try to find some hatching turtles.
No luck for turtles, but we did find a challenge!
On a second attempt he made it! Apparently it is called Ebisu Cave.
We found an interesting temple, it looks a little Indiana Jones style. We didn't realise until afterwards thats neither of us had dared to cross through the vine circle.
We wandered for quite a while, as the train times in this part of Japan have gone from every 2 minutes (TOKYO) to a rare train sighting, so we had time to kill. It felt like we could have been anywhere in the world.
Much love x
